THE GENERAL
robotwars 1999/2000

Now being prepared for series 4. The new knockout auditions have changed the cosmetic appearance. We are now going for something as strong as possible But the rules were changed when we arrived and winning a fight meant nothing. they just picked tv show material.(3/8/00)
THE GENERAL was selected for the SOCCER competition on 26/10/99
Our heat televised 18/2/00 and final 21/4/00
We've fitted a new front blade - FOUR times larger than shown below and it just shovels everything out of the way BUT for Series 4 we will fit a claw at the front and a toy cannon on top.

My question as to the footie final ! TV?? {21st April 2000!}
This was the planned drawing for 'THE GENERAL' with its four large wheels. It's turning circle will be zero and the front lifter will be able to immobilise our opponent. It will have a top speed of 10m.p.h. (forward or reverse) and will be able to climb over everything in its way . |

Here is an early drawing of the technical part of the robot, with one drive motor either side. Honeywell 24v 29amp - approx 550W and each weighing 10kg We've had to change the design due to being unable to source 4 gearboxes at a reasonable price - we will now use 2 g/box with chain and sprocket drive to the other wheels. With two 12 volt batteries at the rear and tractor type tyres we hope it will be a difficult contender to beat in Robot Wars. |
Due to the weight limits we couldn't build a steel angle body frame, but had to weld the aluminium sheet into a box to give strength( we had to have some emergency lessons in Mig welding ali - best tip - make sure its sparkling clean before starting). A working claw will be fitted at the front as a weapon for series 4. The rear axle design was
also a nightmare, what with it having to be removable,
adjustable, strong and lightweight: we think we've
managed three of the four. Rear axle improved for 2000
saving 6 kg. |
